GeoALS is where GIS meets ALS

GeoALS is a nonprofit founded to tackle ALS by applying location analysis to ALS by:

  • Supporting researchers who study environmental exposures

  • Connecting underserved ALS communities to resources; increasing the number of ALS registry registrants

  • Improving access to clinic care and ALS expertise; shortening time-to-diagnosis

  • The seed idea for GeoALS came to founder Pat Dolan just after he was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. Up until 2016, Pat had spent 25 years working with GIS in the utility industry—20 of those years with Esri.

Since 2016 Pat has taken up offers of help from his Esri friends, and quickly a volunteer group formalized and called themselves The Mappers. Over the years, The Mappers, led by Pat, have worked with partner orgs to create maps and apps that support care access and environmental risk factor research. In order to sustain this work, Pat founded the nonprofit GeoALS in October 2024.

GeoALS has nearly the same group of Mappers supporting it today. Esri continues to donate its GIS location platform to support this important work.
